Taking samples from some body areas (biopsy)

Many diseases require surgical interventions to take a sample for diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment, and these treatments may not always be successful and may have undesirable side effects.

However, with the use of interventional radiology, it has become possible to use it as an alternative to surgery to take samples from body areas and examine them. Its effectiveness and accuracy have been proven, and it has become an important tool in sampling from various body organs.

How are samples taken?

To take the sample, the doctor inserts a fine needle through the skin and guides it using X-rays to the targeted area. Then the doctor can remove a small part of the cells for analysis in the laboratory.

This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia without feeling any pain.

Cases that require biopsy using interventional radiology

Interventional radiology may be used to take a biopsy in some cases, including:

  • Detecting the presence of cancer cells.
  • Confirming the presence of an infection.
  • Checking for liver problems.
  • Suspecting enlargement in the uterus, thyroid gland, kidney, or prostate.
  • Enlargement of lymph nodes located in the pancreas, liver, breast, or thyroid gland.

Brain arteries can expand abnormally and bulge to form bubble-like structures, and several factors may play a role in increasing the likelihood of occurrence

Neck arteries are part of the blood vessels that supply the brain with the necessary blood, carrying oxygen-rich blood.
