Obstruction and narrowing of the neck arteries that supply blood to the brain

Neck arteries are part of the blood vessels that supply the brain with the necessary blood, carrying oxygen-rich blood.

 

Sometimes the accumulation of fatty substances and cholesterol may lead to narrowing of the neck arteries, which can reduce blood flow to the brain and increase the risk of stroke.

 

There are many warning signs of stroke that may result from narrowing of the neck arteries, as the following symptoms may occur temporarily and may last for several minutes or hours:

  • Sudden loss of vision or blurred vision in one or both eyes.
  • Weakness with or without numbness on one side of the face, arm, or leg, or on one side of the body.
  • Difficulty speaking.
  • Loss of coordination or dizziness or confusion.
  • Difficulty swallowing.

 

Treatment of neck artery narrowing by interventional radiology

Narrowing of the neck arteries can be treated by directing a catheter with X-ray guidance to install a stent in the narrowed or blocked artery. Once the catheter reaches the site, the balloon attached to it is inflated to expand the artery, and then the stent is placed to keep the blood vessel open.
